"The Faithfulness of God"
Deut. 7:6-10 (NKJV)

Introduction:

The Bible says that God is faithful. His faithfulness is:

  1. Great (Lam. 3:23)
  2. Established (Ps. 89:2)
  3. Incomparable (Ps. 89:8)
  4. Unfailing (Ps 89:33)
  5. Infinite (Ps. 36:5)
  6. Everlasting (Ps 119:90)

Yet the best way to describe God's faithfulness is to see how it is manifested or made known to people.

  1. In keeping His promise and covenant (Deut. 7:9)
  2. In His defense and deliverance of His chosen ones in times of trials and tribulation (1 Peter 4:19)
  3. In His faithfulness to provide you a way out of temptation and not letting you be tempted beyond your ability. (1 Cor. 10:13)
  4. In His forgiving of your sins (1 John 1:9)
  5. In answering your prayers (Mat. 7:7)
  6. In His faithfulness in disciplining us (Heb. 12:6)
  7. In His keeping you believing (1 Cor. 1:6-8)
If God has called you, then His faithfulness obliges Him to keep you. You were called by Him for His glory. His glory is at stake. Therefore, those whom He predestined, he called and those whom He called, He justified and those He justified, He glorified. God is faithful to Himself, therefore He keeps you believing for His glory.
  8. In His faithfulness to punish unbelief. (John 3:17,18)

"Our Great Merciful God"
Psalm 136:1 (NKJV)

The mercy of God is an attribute within Himself without regard to the creature.

Mercy is that attribute within Himself that He tenderly affects towards Himself as the Highest good and He constantly wills Himself to be most blessed and happy!

Now, mercy is the attribute of God to which He both wills and accomplishes their deliverance out of a state of misery unto a state in which they are extremely blessed by knowing and partaking of the blessings of God Himself. The Bible sometimes calls mercy, "compassion". He has compassion on us in our miserable state.

The Mercy of God is described in Scripture as:

  1. Rich (Ephesians 2:4)
  2. Great (Numbers 14;18)
  3. Plenteous - he never runs out of it, praise His name!
  4. Tender
  5. New every morning
  6. High as the heavens
  7. Is His delight - God delights in extending His compassions to all the earth.

What kinds of mercies exist as they flow from God to us?

  1. There is a general mercy extended to all men.
Psalm 145:9 says, "The LORD is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works."
God has compassion on all His creation. Yet, not only is there a general mercy, there is...
  2. A Special mercy of God extended towards mankind, even though they sin against God.
We find this to be true from the words of Jesus when He said, "...for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matt. 5:45)
  3. There is a sovereign mercy given to those who are of the household of faith - those who are saved.
This mercy or compassion is evident in the forgiveness of sins, the restoring of relationship with Him when we have broken it with our sin. It is not given to the unredeemed for they are not repentant and are not believing.

Yet, what does all this talk of mercy tell us to do?

  1. As you have received mercy, learn to love it daily. God loves mercy. We are to love mercy.
  2. We are to practice mercy as we have received it, especially towards the needy. We are to be moved by the plight of orphans, widows and the poor. We are to actually assist them in their hunger and in their lack. We are not to be merciless.
  3. We are to trust in God's mercy. When you get into a miserable state once again, trust that God will deliver you out of His glorious compassions.
  4. Lastly, you are to sing of the mercies of the Lord! You are to praise Him for them. Your are to make melody in your heart with your family and with your church in extolling the mercies of God.
